So it comes across as a synopsis of Elton's musical journey, at least, that's the way I hear it. What's interesting here is how the verses are reminiscent of his earlier, folky material, and then the chorus ramps up into a more pop style of his later work. I've always found that the songs on this album stand out from a lot of what Elton and Bernie had written up to that point. "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" The songwriting is exquisite, purely derived from personal experiences, while the production may be the pinnacle of Gus Dudgeon's work, and Elton's band is flawless. I would argue that this is Elton's most sophisticated album, and the material is solid from start to finish, only rivaled by Tumbleweed Connection. But my appreciation for the album quickly grew, and it soon became an overwhelming favourite. It was the first new release from EJ after I had "officially" become a fan, so in some respect I can understand why this album had such an impact on me. I don't recall my initial reaction, but I do remember listening to it over and over again. SCORE! I even recall the day I bought the record because me and a friend dropped in on another friend of ours down the street, me with the album still in its bag from the store, and having a listening session. Eventually, a downtown department store had an advertised sale for the album at $4.99. It was premium priced at $6.99 in most record stores. It was a mysterious and fascinating song in regular rotation on the radio.īuying the album was a bit of an ordeal. Oddly, I don't recall the particular period when this was actually released, but I do remember the prevalence of the "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" single on the radio. ![]() By the time this album was released, I had already become a fairly big Elton John fan.
